Mid-20th Century Sher Mohammad Full Baritone Sitar
This is a surbahar-sized sitar, not a surbahar. Its main gourd is cut like a sitar, not a kachuwa-style cut that is characteristic of surbahar. This instrument has been authenticated as a Sher Mohammad & Sons, originally sold by Saeed Music Palace in Karachi.
Spectacular.
Vintage subarhar-sized sitars are exceedingly rare. View an example from Rikhi Ram here.
We call these full baritone sitars for want of a conventional nomenclature to describe them. One of the photos depicts this instrument next to a Barun Ray surbhar.
